The Anglo Saxon Ford
Below is an image of the massive Abbey mills, taken from Druces hill, and
below that is an image of exactly the same view in 1011.
below that is an image of exactly the same view in 1011.
Above in this 1011 image, we see to the left, the market place, with its market Cross, to the right, the road to the port gates, and in the centre, we see the gate, through which lies the Anglo Saxon ford.
Above, we get a bit closer to the gate. The gate is mainly there to hold the livestock on the town green.
And in the above, image, We're through the gate and looking at the ford. The children are playing on it's worn stone surface, and we see it's currently covered in mud and silt. The far bank today is St Margaret's hall car park. In 1011, I think for several years the Ford has been used a lot less, mainly I think because of the growing economic depression, created by hugely damaging Danish Raiding.
